When Catalytic Converter Thefts Happen The Most

December 20th, 2022

Back to the Blog

Catalytic converter thefts have risen dramatically since 2019. The global pandemic took a toll on jobs, hitting people's pockets the most. Tack on the rise in price of precious metals, there is no question why there is a rise in catalytic converter crimes in the U.S. Where there are parked cars, catalytic converter thieves are likely scoping out their next target.

If you're unfamiliar with why catalytic converters are a prized steal for crooks, it is because they hold precious metals inside their construction. Metals like palladium, platinum, and rhodium have also gone up in price since the pandemic's economic woes. According to NADA, there was a 353% increase in thefts of catalytic converters after 2021.

What Time Of Day Do Catalytic Converter Thieves Strike The Most?

So, when are catalytic thefts happening? Most catalytic converter thefts happen at night. In the dark, thieves can conceal their identity better and sneak away, going unnoticed. Not only that, but at night, most people are either away from home or fast asleep somewhere in their dwelling where they won't necessarily hear the loud vibration of a saw cutting through their car's exhaust pipes. It is when you least expect your car to be taken advantage of when a thief strikes. But these criminals not only strike in the dark or early morning hours, but they can also steal your converter in broad daylight.

There have been reports of daylight catalytic converter thefts in home driveways and construction zone parking lots. But many catalytic converter thefts during the day could happen at your local mall, movie theater, or anywhere a large number of parked cars gather. The criminals who commit daylight thefts are willing to risk it all. Seeing that there can be multiple witnesses and or camera surveillance, if you happen to walk upon a theft in process, do not interfere but rather call your local authorities.

Most catalytic converter thieves will work in teams during the day or night. In the case of a parking lot heist, one will drive the getaway car and park behind the targeted vehicle while the other crook slides beneath the undercarriage with an electrical saw.

Tips for Avoiding Catalytic Converter Theft at Night or During the Day

There are ways to prevent your car from being targeted. Some vehicles hold a catalytic converter that is worth more than others. Larger trucks such as the Toyota FJ Cruiser and hybrid vehicles with typically two catalytic converters like the Toyota Prius are main targets for thieves. A sufficient way to protect your car's catalytic converter is to park it inside your home garage or well-lit parking garage. If possible, park your vehicle close to the entry of the store or establishment you are visiting, and if you do not have a garage, try parking where there is the most amount of light. These methods are not full proof, but if catalytic converter theft is plaguing your community, there is a sure way to protect your car, truck, or SUV.
